Dawson Creek, BC to Summit Lake, BC
06/16/2010, 368 miles
1600 miles into the trip, we finally set out on the Alaska Highway!
We stayed at the Dawson Creek Best Western which ran almost $200. As we found out on the return trip, the Super 8 is much more reasonable, almost as nice, and closer to the Mile 0 marker and nearby restaurants.
In the morning we checked out the Visitor Center and got mandatory Mile 0 T-shirts and bumper stickers. There are official signs and markers in the Visitor Center parking lot, as well as a monument on 10th St. just off Alaska Ave.
Once on the Alaska Highway we found gas stops to be less frequent, and stops involved riding over dirt and gravel lots. This was a bit unnerving at first. Again, little did we know.
By the time we got to Fort Nelson it was late in the afternoon and it became obvious we weren't going to make it another 300 miles to Watson Lake, YT. I got the Milepost out of my trunk and found a campground about 100 miles ahead, so we decided to try to get there. Along the route from Fort Nelson to the campground at Summit Lake were the first stretches of gravel road which came as a bit of a surprise. Long stretches of loose gravel! In the road!
The campground was beautiful and the caretaker was extremely nice. She let us borrow a hammer for the tent and some drinking water.
