Alaska: Day Eight

Whitehorse, YT to Tok, AK

06/19/2010, 430 miles

No map of this route but it was straight up the Alcan from Whitehorse to Tok. No detour through Dawson City although we heard it's a neat place.

The road from Whitehorse to Haines Junction, then to Destruction Bay was mostly fine. There was a gravel section crossing Kluane Lake that was like riding over a washboard. After Destruction Bay the road turned to crap, and remained that way until 50 miles into Alaska. Frost Heaves, gravel, soft mud, etc. Slow going and hard on bikes and riders. This was the hardest day so far, and we were glad we didn't have to navigate this stretch of road in the rain. What a nightmare that would be.

We finally made it to the border after many more miles of gravel. Note the lack of pavement anywhere near the Alaska sign. Welcome to Alaska, hope you like riding on gravel.

At long last we arrived at a neat motorcycle-friendly camp called Thompson's Eagle's Claw. The place was empty when we arrived and we nosed our way around till we found the sites. We rented a reasonably priced cabin and shared a can of chili for dinner. Later we bumped into a couple of friendly guys riding V-Stroms we'd seen at a gas stop back in Teslin. They'd ridden all the way from Pennsylvania and were headed for Prudhoe Bay.
