Alaska: Day Six

Summit Lake, BC to Watson Lake, YT

06/17/2010, 233 miles

Leaving the campground I was getting the feeling that BC goes on forever. The roads got steadily worse with gravel stretches that went on for a half mile or so, wet with oil and calcium chloride, and more construction delays. Calcium chloride is fun stuff. Goes on wet, bakes on like cement, and doesn't come off with soap and water. Takes paint with it.

Scenic Muncho Lake. The photo falls short.

I was horrified at how dirty my bike was. At that point I could still see the exhaust headers. Heh.

The wildlife started getting more abundant during this part of the trip. We saw dall sheep and bison.

Since it was a short day we stopped off at Liard Hot Springs for a relaxing soak in the pools. We rolled into Watson Lake at about 6pm after a 3-mile stretch of gravel at the BC/YT border. Watson Lake apparently gets crowded fast and there was a scramble for the last few rooms. We grabbed the last room at the Belvedere. The Big Horn Lodge was full. It's important to reserve a day ahead at Watson Lake.
