Alaska: Day Seven

Watson Lake, BC to Whitehorse, YT

06/18/2010, 272 miles

Watson Lake turned out to be not much more than a truck stop with scarce rooms. We were told BJs cafe was good but didn't have time to stop in there, so we ended up eating at the cafe at the Belvedere Hotel. The hotel room had a mouse in it and the wireless kept going out. The parking was all gravel but we were getting used to that.

On the way out we stopped at the Signpost Forest, which is about a square block of signs from all over.

Note the yellow sign with big triangular bumps. That means frost heaves. I grew to really dislike those signs. We saw lots and lots of those later on.

Scenic stop on the way to Whitehorse. Note that everything is paved with gravel. After we got out of BC pretty much everything turned to gravel, except the pavement with frost heaves.

It was raining a bit as we pulled into Whitehorse and there was a surprising amount of traffic. We stayed at the Edgewater although if we go back I'd probably want to check out the Robert Service campground on the edge of town.

Whitehorse is a pretty big town compared to the truck stops where we'd been stopping. There's an excellent coffee shop across from the Edgewater, a car wash, auto parts store, Yamaha and HD dealerships, good food, etc.

Now and again we'd see these "Motorcycle Friendly" billboards.

Janna went into a random hotel to ask if the sign referred to anything specific, and it doesn't.

Whitehorse train depot on the Yukon River:

The Depot is scenic but there aren't any trains that stop there, just a disappointing waterfront trolley. The actual train to Skagway departs from Carcross.
